ASMF 5-Ft. Super Blue, Chucky Gordon & DJ Stephen (Caribbean Event Review)

Atlanta Soca Music Fest 5- Featuring Super Blue, Chucky Gordon & DJ Stephen

By: Marissa Williams

And just like that, Atlanta got its stamp as one of the premiere soca cities in North America thanks to the much anticipated Atlanta Soca Music Festival (ASMF 5). The event took place at Karibbean Konnection in Decatur, GA on December 14th, 2013 and  was presented by DJ Stephen and Slacky Matthews. Patrons were treated to music from some of Atlanta’s elite Caribbean DJ’s including DJ Sexi K, Elite Soundz and One Drop Sounds while they waited for feature performances from Chucky Gordon and Road March King-Super Blue.

As has become characteristic of DJ Stephen’s events, ASMF 5 was much more than a show; it was a production. The commitment to quality and attention to detail were evident from the minute patrons entered the building through a covered bridge that shielded them from the rain. They then walked into a transformed Karibbean Konnection space complete with a large VIP section, white decor and a blue chandelier hanging over the stage. The visual impact was only the beginning.

As the crowded room eagerly awaited the feature performances, sweet soca continued to play, drinks continued to flow and food continued to be shared. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, dancing to the music, cheering on the iron section-all the makings of a great fete. But, it soon became evident that the crowd wanted more. And so Chucky Gordon made his way on to the stage. The crowd was ready.

As the strains to his hit tune, ‘Anything ah want‘ began to play the crowd went wild and the dancing amplified. After singing a few hits, Chucky changed direction and treated the crowd to an acapella session featuring calypso classics such as ‘Lorraine,’ and ‘Jean and Dinah‘. He rounded off his performance by inviting resident ‘iron man,’ Rikki Marichaud to play some background rhythms as he continued to sing tune after tune. When Chucky was done, the sweat was dripping, the crowd was singing and everyone was ready for more.

DJ Stephen did not disappoint. He took to the turn-tables and raised the crowd to a frenzy. By the time the musical strains of Fantastic Friday began to play, the energy in the room was electric. The moment had arrived. Super Blue was on stage.

It was ‘Bachannal Time.’ Super Blue sang old and new classics while the crowd found anything to wave, signaled for Lara, summoned the Jab Jabs and called out to Ethel. The Road March King did not have to sing much, as the crowd was more than willing to do it for him, including singing Happy Birthday to a member of his team.

At the end of it all, I was glad I braced the rain to participate in ASMF 5.  The bar was stocked.  A variety of Caribbean food was available for sale. And there were no rude bouncers at the front door (a treat in Atlanta). All in all, a night of quality entertainment and good vibes that was well worth the few drops of rain.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this website.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and appearance.
I must say that you’ve done a fantastic job with this.
In addition, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Internet explorer.
    Excellent Blog!
