Carnival fun in South Carolina

Fresh on the heels of the Atlanta Carnival Experience, “International Stephen” and his DSM team assembled Caribbean people and Carnival lovers alike for the fifth annual South Carolina Carnival. Themed “Music, Food and Culture” and complete with four days of non-stop action and events, the festival was relocated to Main Street, downtown Columbia for the first time and attracted the attention of the Columbia New Journal and television network, ABC.
Founded in 2014, South Carolina Carnival (SCC) has been involved with the fresh winds of innovation and change within the community at large. The vision and purpose of the SCC is to provide a memorable culturally blended experience to the Carolina’s and beyond and according to Phillip, the festival continues to grow annually and is fulfilling these agendas:
“Now in our fifth year,” said Phillip, “the South Carolina Carnival continues to grow and evolve and we were fortunate to get permission to parade on Main Street – which is the liveliest street in downtown Columbia and the home of a lot of the major media networks…”
SCC Founder, Lisa Small echoed these sentiments and explained why the organization sought to relocate their activities to the main street in the ‘capital city’ of Columbia:
“We strategically wanted to position ourselves on Main Street,” stated Small, “and make enough noise to attract the attention of these mainstream media outlets to let them know that we are here and creating a cultural impact with our Food Fest, Cultural Parade, Block Parties and other events to complete the 4-day festival.”
Revellers and patrons from Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St Lucia and many other islands enjoyed the extended weekend of festivities and took to the streets for the main parade, after supporting a number of day and night time events.
