Soca Artistes To Keep Your Eye On In 2019

2019 has been an amazing year in soca music. From bringing soca to the world stage at Coachella to being played in the victory parade for the Toronto Raptors, the genre has had many successes, all due to the talented artistes below with many more included. With carnival and festival season winding down, we want to keep the energy flowing with this 2BKaribbean top five list of Soca Artistes that delivered big in 2019.

1. Calypso Rose

An icon in calypso and soca in Trinidad and Tobago, Calypso Rose won the “Calypso King” competition in 1963 in Grenada, and then the “Road March” competition in 1977, making her the first woman to win either title. This year, her performance at Coachella made her the oldest performer in the history of the music festival. During her performance, she featured special guest, Machel Montano. With her hits “Fire In Me Wire,” and “Leave Me Alone,” Calypso Rose has climbed back to the top of the charts in 2019.

2. Nailah Blackman

“Iron Man” became the most popular song played by schools at Trinidad and Tobago’s School’s Panorama competition, with more than five primary and secondary school bands performing the tune. Blackman’s song was also featured on the “Get Soca 2019” compilation album, highlighting the top songs of the 2019 carnival season.

3. Voice

Two-time winner of the Soca Monarch competition in Trinidad and Tobago, Aaron ‘Voice’ St. Louis has made strides in the soca world, becoming one of the most popular artistes in the genre since 2017. From his song “Time for Love” in 2015 to “Alive and Well” in 2019, Voice has been creating a new voice for young soca artistes to come into the national and international stage.

4. Patrice Roberts

Known as the “First Lady of Soca” Patrice Roberts has been performing since her 2005 collaboration with Bunji Garlin. From winning the 2006 Road March competition to the release of her song “Big Girl Now,” Patrice Roberts has represented for the women of Trinidad and is a powerhouse in the soca genre. With her new releases this year “Kiss & Tell” as well as “Judgement Stage,” Patrice kept the energy flowing for the 2019 carnival season.

5. Mr. Killa

As the winner of the International Soca Monarch 2019 competition, Mr. Killa’s song “Run Wid It” became an anthem for the 2019 carnival season. He’s also released a new song “Jab Party” which also played during carnival. Mr. Killa represented Grenada, and brought the Spice Island to the spotlight in 2019.
