OUR AMBASSADOR5™ SERIES SHOWCASES 5 QUESTIONS/FACTS WITH A CULTURAL AMBASSADOR WHO IS ACTIVELY PROMOTING CARIBBEAN CULTURE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

I took the chance and took the class. I almost died. It was the best two hours of my life. Kamp Kamila’s Fitness Boot Camp is not for the faint hearted, rather, it’s for those serious about making a lifestyle change and making health and wellness part of their daily routine. The founder of the movement, Kamila McDonald, is on a serious mission to introduce the Caribbean diaspora  (and by extension the world) to a healthier way of life grounded in balanced food choices and sustainable exercise practices. In the boot camp, she spends one hour challenging every muscle in your body and just as you think you are about to faint, she cools it down and starts a discussion on nutrition and meal choices. Her classes have attracted a diverse crowd at different fitness levels who are all ripe for change.

Her holistic approach to health and wellness strikes a chord with most because of the very relatable context of seeing Kamila challenge her very own habits and adopt this new regime. And there in the lies the difference- Kamila has walked in many of her clients shoes.

She knows what it is like to eat junk food, to not exercise, to see the scale jump up and down regularly and to finally resolve that enough is enough. Couple that personal experience with an affable personality and a genuine interest in the wellness of everyone who attends her boot camp, and you have someone who continues to prove herself to be a true leader for this Caribbean fitness mission throughout the diaspora. Kamp Kamila is definitely changing lives for the better; one boot camp at a time.

ABOUT WHAT MADE FITNESS HER MISSION AND HOW DID SHE STICK WITH IT:

Kamila McDonaldKamila believes hitting rock bottom was her biggest blessing.  In her words, ‘your weakest moments help you emerge stronger than you were before’.  She truly believes in the power of resilience that is innate in all humans. Her own experience has shown the importance of developing the mental capacity to accept challenges and to know that they help build strength and present opportunities for growth. Her catalyst for pursing her fitness mission encompasses all these ideas because she did hit rock bottom and did not want to be there anymore. As she began to accept that she was destined for so much more it helped build her focus on continuing her journey despite the inevitable difficulties.

ABOUT MERGING HER TWO LOVES OF MEDIA AND FITNESS:

It was at college (where she was pursuing her journalism degree) where she gained the most weight. It was while she pursuedKamila MCDonald her love for journalism and telling stories that she stumbled across a new passion for health and wellness. She set tangible goals for herself to help her complete her mission. One being, entering the Miss Jamaica World Pageant. Despite how incredible this goal seemed to her family and peers at the time, it served the purpose of encouraging her to share her goals and increase accountability. Although she did not win the Miss Jamaica World Pageant, she did win the title of Miss Jamaica  World Beach Beauty 2009, which for her was an even sweeter victory because it solidified in her mind that she had conquered what was holding her back for so long.  This win led her to becoming certified as a personal trainer and sports nutritionist before starting her business called JamRock Fitness. Once again she tied in her love for journalism by using social media platforms to tell her story which she realized expanded her reach to global platforms.

ABOUT SOME OF HER CHALLENGES BUILDING THE BRAND OF KAMP KAMILA:

Caribbean FitnessShe readily concedes that her brand represents a small company with a very big mission. But to her, because this mission expands way beyond her own personal goals and touches so many lives, there is no doubt in her mind that the universe will provide. To prove this she cited the example of her being in Atlanta for the Kamp Kamila Boot Camp thanks to something as simple as an Instagram message from Keisha Huggins of Cosmic Energy Fitness. From that, she was able to secure a location for her event and a crowd of eager participants. She talked openly about some health challenges that plague the Caribbean diaspora and how her business goals address these. For example the Caribbean region has established itself as the diabetes capital of the world. Statistics like these highlight that fitness and health is more than having a slamming summer body or Carnival body. To her it is about Caribbean people healing themselves , changing thought processes and incorporating wellness into their everyday lifestyle. That’s what her business is about. Yes, right now it would be nice to have more capital and corporate support, but, at the end of the day this heart-felt mission will be supported.

ABOUT HOW SHE USES HER FITNESS PLATFORM TO PROMOTE CARIBBEAN CULTURE:

Caribbean Fitness-Kamila McDonald

To her Caribbean music is undeniable. Because of her background coming from a musical family, it gives her extra pleasure to see people getting down to Caribbean music while working out.  To her the soca, reggae and dancehall all create an undeniably unique vibe unique to Caribbean culture that she takes with her everywhere she goes.

ABOUT HER ADVICE FOR BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS:

Caribbean FitnessShe would like everyone to remember that we are all here on earth to fulfill a mission and a purpose. It’s her belief that everyone has a personal responsibility to find out what their mission is and go after it whole-heartedly. She thinks that many of us hold ourselves back with negative thoughts and by finding obstacles, but, she knows that when you believe in yourself and your life mission then you can make anything happen.  As for her, she knows that , ‘I am here for a purpose and I am going to go after it‘.  She advises all that, ‘ if there is something burning inside of you- do it -this is not a dress rehearsal for another life. Live every day like it’s your last’.
