Guyana’s Mashramani Celebrations-Top 5 Reasons to Experience It
Mashramani (otherwise known as Mash) is an annual celebration of Guyana becoming a Republic nation in 1970. Its a festive celebration splashed with colorful costumes and infectious music. The days leading up to the celebration are filled with various competitions in poetry, masquerade, physical display, dance, calypso and soca.
As a national holiday it is celebrated in a semi-official way all across the length and breadth of Guyana with flag-raising ceremonies or sporting events. The biggest celebration usually takes place in or around the Guyana’s capital Georgetown, where spectacular costume competitions, float parades, masquerade bands and dancing in the streets to the accompaniment of steel band music and calypsos, take place.*
Unlike other Carnival celebrations in the month of February, Mashramni is purely secular. The festivities have similar attributes to other Caribbean carnivals with the presence of costumes, music and other celebratory practices. However, these events were established to celebrate Guyana’s Republic status and have no religious ties whatsoever. It is a popular belief that the costumes and masks were introduced to allow participants ‘to lose their sense of individuality and promote greater social cohesion.’ **
Every year, Mashramani is given a theme designed to promote positivity and to create a united resolve to achieve certain goals.** The 2018 theme is, ‘Let’s cooperate and celebrate Republic 48.’ At the launch of the 2018 event, Regional Chairman, Renis Morian, said the celebration goes beyond simply celebrating Mashramani in terms of the parties. He emphasized the need to also include celebrations of the achievements of young people and children across the region.
“It will take not just hard work, but collective work; because Mashramani speaks of communities, groups, families working together…Your dreams and aspirations could be realized once we take note of the emphasis of Mashramani — ‘celebration after hard work’,” Morian said.**
