David Rudder’s Music Shines on New York Times Best Of 2018 List

David Rudder’s twenty year old song makes a resurgence on New York Times Best Of 2018 Music List

So much trouble in the home of the brave and the land of the free
Am I an immigrant or am I a new slave, made for all brutality?
I don’t think so.

Is it that man has lost his reason?
You can’t even blame the heat
They’re moving like jackals in the hunting season
And the refugee’s soul is the meat….

The poignant lyrics from this song, The Immigrants by David Rudder, are as relevant today as they were over twenty (20) years ago when Rudder first released it on his ‘Beloved’ album. The incident that birthed this song was the 1997 attack on Haitian immigrant, Abner Louima, by the New York Police. The song was adapted by Guatemalan singer, Gaby Moreno and American musician, Van Dyke Parks and released on July 4th 2018.

The song came in at number twenty-five (25) on the New York Times lists that ranked the 65 Best songs for 2018. The list compiled by music critic, Jon Parles, also included music by Sade, Cardi B and YoLa Tengo to name a few.
