Calypso Rose, 76, has become the first international gold album artiste coming from Trinidad and Tobago.
An album goes gold when it is sold more than 50,000 times. It becomes platinum when it crosses 100,000 and she’s expected to attain that feat in mid-November.
Rose, who has been in the industry for 60 years, received the accolade in France, for the album “Far From Home”, co-produced by international star Manu Chao.
The album was released in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland in May 2016 and will be released in Trinidad and Tobago in November.
Her manager Jean Michel Gibert says Rose has already done 30 shows in Europe this year and will do another 25 in the next three months.
She performed live at the Grand Journal Primetime TV show – Canal Plus to an audience estimated at over 1 million in April 2016.
Other shows included Banlieues Blues, London O2, Water Festival (Germany), Mundial Festival (Netherlands) , Vieilles Charrues (France), Esperanza (Belgium), Roskilde (Norway) and MIDEM (Cannes).
She is booked to perform across Europe from September 8th 2016 to November 18th 2016.
‘Because Music’ based in France and UK is one of the top European music labels (one of their main acts is Major Lazer) with Warner Music Group as a partner.
They are releasing the new Calypso Rose album with a huge promotional drive involving mainstream TV shows, printed media, radio and live shows in a way never done for a Trinbagonian artist.
She will receive the WOMEX award for the Best 2016 Artist of the Year on October 23rd 2016 in Spain.
Calypso Rose, whose real name is Linda McCartha Monica Sandy-Lewis, has written more than 800 songs and recorded more than 20 albums.
